Transplant from Texas meets her midnight snack match.
after a recent move from austin Texas, and it’s famed 6th street bar scene, I knew I would find myself learning about Philly through its equivalent- south street and the people I met partying there. After a sweaty summer night, spent snaking through the likes of Bob & Barbara’s, Tattoed Moms, Milk boy and more with my new friend Angelo. I was pretty tipsy and very hungry. I asked him (he lives on south and 7th) if he knew a place to get good food said he knew “just the place” and took me to Lorenzo and sons. The line was out the door so I literally couldn’t see what I was about to come face to face with. It turned out to be a GIGANTIC slice of pizza and I had ordered two, one for me and one for him. But each slice was so big it had to be served on two paper plates! I was used to some small tacos after a night of heavy drinking but I was pretty confident in my pizza eating skills. We sat on the curb and ate while Angelo told me more about this new city of mine. Before I knew it I was down almost just the crust of my pizza and proud of my accomplishment. I stood up to give Angelo a hug goodbye and realized I had just made a huge mistake. I leaned over the sidewalk and puked every bite of that pizza up. Angelo was shocked and asked me if I was ok. I said yes I just ate too much. He nodded knowingly and complimented my surprisingly eloquent upchuck skills. We would end up on that curb eating Lorenzos a lot since that summer and I fell in love with Philly and pizza as a sober snack…but I always split my slice with a friend.
