To: South Street Souvlaki’s taramasalata

From "Mapping memories: Love Letters to South Street"

Go to the project

When my wife Mary and I moved to Philadelphia in 1975, we went to South Street Souvlaki for the first time.  Mary ordered retsina wine and taramasalata then and whenever we went afterwards.  She would order taramasalata at other Greek restaurants, but it never was as good as the one at South Street Souvlaki.  An amateur gourmet cook herself (Mary had worked for Julia Child and wrote her own cookbook), she tried making her own taramasalata, but it was not as good as the one at South Street Souvlaki.

Mary passed away of a heart attack in 2019 at age 69 after 48 years of marriage.  So for me, South Street Souvlaki’s taramasalata will forever be the best.
